How to get a rewrite that keeps its edge

A rewrite request usually returns a politer version of your text. Four instructions prevent it: keep every claim, keep the verb strength, change nothing you did not name, and return the same number of sentences. Say them once at the start rather than correcting afterwards.

Asking for a clearer version and receiving a gentler version is the standard outcome. The assistant is not disobeying; clarity and caution were never separated in the request.

Name what must survive

List the claims that have to remain, by their content rather than by their wording. A rewrite that drops a claim reads well and says less, and the loss is hard to spot because nothing looks wrong. Naming 3 or 4 load-bearing statements takes a line and protects the whole passage.

Keep the verbs

Softening happens in the verbs first: will becomes may, causes becomes is associated with, must becomes should consider. Asking for the verb strength to be preserved is more precise than asking for a direct tone, because it names the exact place where strength leaks out.

Forbid unrequested changes

An assistant asked to shorten will often also reorder, retitle and add a summary. Stating that nothing else changes turns a rewrite into an edit. This single instruction saves the comparison work of finding what quietly moved.

Fix the shape

Requesting the same number of sentences, or the same number of paragraphs, gives you a text you can compare line by line. Without it, a rewrite arrives at a different length and the diff has to be done by reading rather than by looking.

Questions a buyer asks

Why does asking for a direct tone not work?

Tone is judged and length is measured. Instructions that name a countable property survive better than instructions that name a style.

Should I paste the whole document?

Paste the passage that matters and 1 paragraph around it. More context costs budget that the reply needs, and the assistant rarely uses the rest.

What if the rewrite is worse?

Ask for the 2 versions of the specific sentence rather than the whole passage again. Narrowing the request is faster than repeating it.

Paste a paragraph and ask for a rewrite that keeps every claim.
