What a draft needs from you first

A draft is only useful if editing it is cheaper than starting over, and generic drafts fail that test. Supplying the audience, the single point, 3 pieces of your own material, and the length before asking is what makes the difference.

The complaint about generated drafts is that they are bland. Blandness is not a property of the model; it is what happens when nothing in the request could only apply to your situation.

The audience decides everything else

Who reads this, and what do they already know? A draft for a colleague and a draft for a customer share no sentences. Without the audience the model writes for a general reader, and a general reader is nobody, which is what blandness actually is.

One point, stated by you

Write the single thing the reader should take away, in your own words, before asking. If you cannot, the draft will not find it for you. This sentence usually survives into the final text and it is the cheapest thing you will write all day.

Three pieces of your own material

A number, an example, a specific consequence. These are what the model cannot invent and what makes the text yours. A draft built around 3 concrete items is editable; a draft built around none is a template.

Say the length before, not after

Length changes structure, and structure cannot be adjusted afterwards without rewriting. Asking for 200 words and receiving 800 means starting again, which is why the number belongs in the first request.

Questions a buyer asks

What if I do not know the point yet?

Then the useful request is not a draft. Ask for 5 candidate points and pick one; that is a different and much shorter task.

Does giving examples make the text sound like me?

Partly. Voice comes from rhythm and word choice, and pasting 2 paragraphs of your own writing as a sample does more for voice than any adjective.

Is it worth iterating on a bad draft?

Once, with a specific instruction. After the second unsuccessful attempt, the request is wrong rather than the reply, and fixing the request is faster.

Give the audience, the point and 3 specifics, then ask for the draft.
